Ayala Corporation issued the following announcement on May 19.
In response to the lack of ventilators needed by the country's growing COVID-19 patients, Integrated Micro-electronics, Inc. (IMI) and its UK-based subsidiary Surface Technology International Limited (STI, Ltd.) to consult with experts, health practitioners, and government branches regarding the development of a licensed Ventura Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device solution.
Ventura CPAP Prototype
Ventura CPAP is a type of ventilator that has the ability to apply continuous mild air pressure to patients with difficulty breathing. This device is a non-profit initiative based on an off-patent CPAP system with the ability to optimize oxygen consumption.
The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved the use of Ventura CPAP in the UK. Its design is also licensed by the University College London Hospital (UCLH) and Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains for use in special conditions such as COVID-19. IMI already has a blessing from UK device proponents to simulate its manufacturing in the Philippines.
Filipino IMI engineers
According to UCLH, using Ventura CPAP resulted in a 60% -70% success rate in COVID-19 patients who needed to be intubated and eventually cured. IMI is currently working with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Health Technologies (IBEHT) of De La Salle University to localize Venture CPAP production.
IMI is a global technology and manufacturing solutions expert with headquarters in the Philippines. This is the first of a series of multi-industry consultative sessions in the country. Among those who engage in consultative sessions is Nick Davey, IMI's chief technology officer. Davey set up STI Ltd.'s research and development team in 2011. He is also a key member of the UK Ventilator Challenge Consortium in collaboration with UK cabinet officials.
IMI, STI, Ltd., and AC Health continue to look for alternative ventilators for COVID-19 patients.
